San Miguelito Violence Forces Panama Health Centers to Reduce Hours
Health authorities in San Miguelito reported that in recent weeks there have been violent incidents, such as shootings, especially at the Amelia Denis de Icaza Health Center, located in Pan de Azúcar.
The growing violence in parts of San Miguelito has forced the Ministry of Health to reduce opening hours at several medical centers and reinforce police security to protect patients and healthcare personnel. “There are groups with differences who are trying to resolve their problems. The shootings always happen in front of the health center. Regardless of whether we have two or three police officers, it’s an area where we need more security for the population.” Violent clashes and gang-related activities in San Miguelito (Panama) have forced local health centers, particularly the Torrijos Carter facility, to adjust operations. Incidents of rival gang violence spilling into medical waiting areas have compelled authorities to shorten hours, enhance security measures, and request permanent police presence to protect staff and patients.
San Miguelito Health Care Impact & Violence
- The Crisis: Armed clashes, gang-related shootings, and individuals targeting rivals have disrupted medical services, severely threatening the safety of patients and clinical staff.
- Facility Affected: The Torrijos Carter Health Center—which serves up to 200 patients daily—has been the epicenter of this issue, prompting urgent calls for enhanced protection.
- Operational Changes: Emergency and general services at risk-area clinics have been forced into reduced or altered hours to minimize exposure to evening and late-night violence.
- Broader Response: To contain the violence across the district, Panamanian authorities implemented weekend curfews (from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.) in high-risk corregimientos like Belisario Frías and Arnulfo Arias.
