Let the voter beware in 2014

FOLLOWING close on a warning to voters by an Electoral Tribunal (TE) not to be swayed by propaganda, civic leaders have come out with a similar message.
With a year left until the 2014 election they have begun urging citizens to be careful in picking the leaders who will run the country until 2019.
Hugo Wood said: "We are citizens, not customers," and emphasized that people should not be fixated on which candidates have the most resources, and that it is important to know their ideals.
He also advocated that politicians run campaigns that focus on issues.
"They should give their proposals so that people can decide on the ideas of candidates," Wood said. "Otherwise, people will have bread for today and go hungry tomorrow."
Former (TE) Judge Guillermo Márquez Amado called for people to exercise their right of electing the country's authorities, but before taking this step at the ballot box, he said it is necessary to make a comprehensive analysis of the candidates.
He also said that the decision should be based on more than promises.
"Instead of giving us fish, it is preferable that they teach us to fish," he said.
Márquez Amado also said that it is necessary to look at the credentials of the candidates.
According to the preliminary electoral roll, 2.48 million people are eligible to vote in the 2014 election.
