Will Canada Be Successful at World Cup 2026?

Guest Contribution – Most sports fans will currently be focused on the NHL playoffs and wondering whether the Habs can now end the drought and bring the Stanley Cup back to Canada. The Raptors’ postseason ended early, and it will be a while before we know whether the Blue Jays will be representing the nation in a championship series again.

But for many, the next big sports event on the horizon is the FIFA World Cup. As co-host, Canada has not had to qualify for the tournament, and earlier signs of confidence in Les Rouges have now made way for nervous energy as the tournament draws closer. The sportsbooks at Online Sports Betting are already doing a brisk business.

But what can we realistically expect from the national team? Jesse Marsch is in charge of one of the most talented groups of athletes in Canadian history, and will be looking for home advantage to play its part. But will Canada be successful at this summer’s finals? And what would success even look like?

Recent Results

This Canadian squad is regarded as the best yet, but the results have not been universally encouraging over the last few years. There have been highlights, such as the run to the final four of the 2024 Copa América, but the three losses at the 2022 World Cup was a major disappointment, and results have been mixed this year.

There are now only two more games for Marsch to get things right, with the most recent friendlies against Iceland and Tunisia bringing zero wins and only two goals, both from the penalty spot. Those performances have made the fans nervous, so a good send-off in June – against Uzbekistan and Ireland – will be needed to build confidence again.

Progress from the Group

A lot has been said about the sizable Italian-Canadian community that was left devastated by the Azzurri’s failure to overcome Bosnia in their playoff in April. Some might think that the World Cup group is more winnable now, but there are still some very good teams in the way of Canada making it to the knockout rounds.

That being said, progressing from Group B should be the absolute minimum requirement for Marsch’s side. The opening game against Bosnia will be difficult, but a positive result there and a win against Qatar should give Canada the points it needs to finish in the top two, at least. Falling at the first hurdle cannot be tolerated.

Home Support

As much as making it out of the group is important, Canada really needs to finish top to make the most of its World Cup chances. That’s because finishing above Bosnia, Switzerland, and Qatar will guarantee the chance of playing the next two knockout ties on home soil. Both the rounds of 32 and 16 are scheduled for Vancouver if all goes to plan.

World Cup finals history shows that home advantage can make a lot of difference. In early tournaments, the likes of Brazil, England, and Argentina lifted the trophy in front of their own fans. But, even in the modern age, where the tournament has been hosted by “lesser” nations, the likes of South Korea have overachieved because of the home fan effect.

Regional Leaders

Every Canadian football fan will be hoping that Les Rouges can upset the odds and go all the way this summer, but it is more likely that one of the global powerhouses will end up lifting the trophy. That might mean that success looks a little different, with a run to the quarterfinals a good indication that Canada has done well.

In the last few years, there have been many football pundits around the world claiming that there has been a power shift in North America. Where once Mexico, and latterly the US, has been the undisputed number one, Canada has been on the rise. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the perfect time for Canada to prove itself to be the best team in the region.

Beyond 2026

Hopefully, Canada will be successful this summer, but the people in charge of football in this country should be looking at the World Cup as just the beginning. A good performance is the best way for Canada to prepare for the future – and continue to grow the game in this country.
