The Panama Canal Neutrality Treaty: Portugal Shows Interest in Signing Up
Pictured below is the meeting between Panama and Portugal. This treaty, in force since October 1, 1979, has been signed by more than 40 States and territories.
Portugal is set to join the Panama Canal Neutrality Treaty. This was announced by Ana Isabel Xavier, Portugal’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, who held a meeting Thursday with the Deputy Minister in charge of Multilateral Affairs and International Cooperation, Alejandro Mendoza. In recent months, Panama has taken steps to promote the accession of new countries to the Neutrality Treaty, at a time when there is an increase in international tensions due to conflicts between countries that generate instability in markets and trade, especially in the Middle East.
