CSS Medical Team Saves Patient with Aortic Dissection at Ciudad de la Salud

A medical team from the Social Security Fund (CSS) successfully performed one of the most complex cardiovascular interventions at the City of Health, official sources reported.   The magnitude of the procedure involved high-precision surgery that included replacing the affected segment of the aorta, the CSS noted. The case involved a patient diagnosed with chronic aortic dissection, accompanied by a large aneurysm in the ascending aorta, a condition described as “very high risk to life” which, without immediate attention, can lead to death in a matter of hours or days.  The magnitude of the procedure involved high-precision surgery that included replacement of the affected segment of the aorta, replacement of the aortic valve, and reimplantation of the coronary arteries, in a context of high intraoperative risk.

The intervention was led by Dr. Pedro Echeverría, along with Dr. Lizeth Saldaña, cardiovascular surgery residents, and the anesthesiology team of the National Specialized Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center, in a multidisciplinary approach that was key to the outcome.  According to the report, the surgery was carried out in two stages: a first day that lasted for more than six hours and a second phase focused on the detailed verification of the results and the final closure of the procedure.

“Thanks to the precision of the team and the timely intervention, a fatal complication was avoided,” the statement details, which also confirms that the patient is showing favorable progress during her recovery.  According to the CSS, the case reflects the level of complexity of the care provided at CENACET and the role of specialized personnel in the care of high-risk cardiovascular pathologies in the country.
