Marcos Peñaranda, widely known by his social media alias “Arquiterror,” serves as the Jefe de Inspección Municipal (Chief of Municipal Inspection) for the Municipality of Panama. He was appointed to this role within the Directorate of Works and Constructions by Mayor Mayer Mizrachi.

- Social Media Influence: Peñaranda initially gained immense popularity on Instagram and TikTok under the hashtag #Arquiterror. He used his platform to expose urban planning mistakes, infrastructure failures, and non-compliant building practices by private developers and public entities across Panama.
- The “Tape Measure” Icon: Armed with a tape measure, he routinely pointed out real-world structural flaws, such as dangerous sidewalk ramps for disabled individuals, poorly distributed housing layouts, and construction in flood-prone areas.
- Academic Credentials: Beyond his digital presence, he is a university professor at the University of Panama. He teaches architectural design and holds a Master’s degree in Bioclimatic Architecture.
- Recognition: His constructive criticism earned him the “Influencer Positivo” award at the Panamá en Positivo awards.
🏢 Transition to Public Office
His transition from digital watchdog to public official happened when Mayor Mayer Mizrachi challenged him to inspect the municipality’s own headquarters, the Edificio Hatillo. After Peñaranda flagged multiple irregularities, the mayor formally offered him the city’s top construction inspection post to clean up urban development.
In his current role, Peñaranda oversees municipal infrastructure oversight and spearheads programs targeted at reclaiming public space, restoring pedestrian walkways, implementing modern urban design guides, and ensuring accessibility standards are met citywide.
