NY Yankees Recall Shortstop Anthony Volpe to Replace Panama’s Injured José ‘Chema’ Caballero

The Panamanian shortstop was placed on the Yankees’ 10-day injured list due to a finger injury.

Panamanian shortstop José “Chema ” Caballero was placed on the New York Yankees’ 10-day injured list on Tuesday due to a small fracture in the middle finger of his right hand.  With Caballero sidelined, the team recalled shortstop Anthony Volpe pictured below from Triple-A to replace him on the active roster. Volpe’s addition was initially reported by Francys Romero of BeisbolFR, while Jorge Castillo of ESPN confirmed Caballero’s placement on the injured list.

Caballero’s injury occurred after a play on Sunday, when he dove back to first base, during the ninth inning of the 4-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.  During the last week, Caballero had an outstanding performance in seven games, registering an average of .263 (5 hits in 19 at-bats), with three runs scored and one RBI.  In the current campaign, the Panamanian is averaging .259, with 4 home runs and 13 RBIs.  The native of Los Santos pictured below is in his second season with the Bronx Bombers, having joined the team last year from the Tampa Bay Rays via trade.

Caballero is in his fourth season in the Major Leagues, following his debut in 2023 with the Seattle Mariners.  Volpe, meanwhile, returns to the Majors after undergoing shoulder surgery during the offseason. This year he spent rehab in the Double-A and Triple-A affiliates, batting .221 with one home run and eight RBIs in 18 games.  This would be Volpe’s fourth season with the Yankees since debuting in 2013. In this period, the 24-year-old has a .222 batting average, with 52 home runs and 192 RBIs in 153 games.
