The Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported that the water currently being distributed on Taboga Island is not suitable for human consumption, following failures at the existing water treatment plant. The measure was adopted in conjunction with the National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (IDAAN), which decided to temporarily supply the island with water from a new water treatment plant. According to the authorities, the water resource may only be used for basic activities.

“This water can only be used for essential needs (personal hygiene, washing and cleaning of the home, among others), but at the moment it is not suitable for human consumption,” said the Ministry of Health. The agency explained that it is currently awaiting laboratory results to determine if the water meets drinking water standards. “We are awaiting certification from the laboratory, which is currently analyzing the water from the new plant to determine if it is suitable for human consumption,” the statement added. Meanwhile, IDAAN continues with the work to correct the damage to the water treatment plant that originally supplied the island. Authorities urged residents and visitors to follow the recommendations and avoid drinking the water until an official certification guaranteeing its potability is issued.
