In Order to Deepen the “Strategic Alliance” the Israeli President will Arrive in Panama

Although the trip will begin in Panama, it is the first time in history that an Israeli president has made an official visit to Panama City.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog will begin a four-day trip on Wednesday to Panama and then Costa Rica, two countries with which Israel currently maintains close ties, to “deepen and strengthen the strategic alliance” with both nations, the Israeli Presidency announced on Sunday.  “President Herzog’s visit to Panama and Costa Rica reflects the importance of Israel’s ties with Latin American countries and the renewed momentum in Israel’s relations with the nations of Central and South America,” the Israeli Presidency said in a statement.  Herzog’s office has described the trip as a “historic visit” to “two friendly countries and close allies of the State of Israel.”

Among other events, the President of Israel will attend the inauguration of Costa Rica’s President-elect, Laura Fernández Delgado, at the invitation of outgoing President Rodrigo Chaves Robles.  Although the trip will begin in Panama, it is the first time in history that an Israeli president has made an official visit to Panama City.  Herzog will meet there with President José Raúl Mulino – after meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos – and members of his government to “discuss strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation,” as well as with members of the local Jewish community, according to the Israeli Presidency.  The Israeli president will continue his trip in Costa Rica, where, in addition to the inauguration, he will attend a dinner for heads of state hosted by President Chaves Robles, and will also meet with Costa Rican Jewish personalities.
