Fresh phone monitoring allegations
ACCUSATIONS about alleged government wiretapping of political opponents and journalists continue to fly with a claim on Sunday, June 9 that "spy antennas" have been installed near the home of presidential candidate Juan Carlos Navarro.
PRD Party spokesman Máximo Estrada said that the equipment "at first glance seem to be telephone listening antennas."
He said the antennas were installed two weeks ago and, since they were erected, the candidate has had trouble with cell phone service at his house.
The antennas are located on the Spanish Cultural Center, part of which is being remodeled.
The PRD is planning to have a technical engineer perform tests to determine the origin of the equipment.
Recordings of conversations between PRD leaders have surfaced in the last few weeks. The PRD has alleged the government has released these recordings and President Martinelli has Tweeted their existence.
