Fresh student protests, more arrests
ANOTHER student demonstration led to at least 25 students from the National Institute being detained during a Wednesday confrontation with riot police on the Avenue of the Martyrs.
Several of the students threw objects such as rocks that damaged vehicles and buildings. A number of businesses closed to avoid being vandalized.
The protest, which also included students from the University of Panama, started at noon. Students are demanding an end to the teacher's strike that started on July 30 and the possible sale of land where some schools in Paitilla are located.
The university students closed a lane of Simon Bolívar Avenue. They were demanding that Minister of Education Lucy Molinar end the strike by signing an agreement with teachers.
The roads were cleared by riot police.
