Austria Seeks to Join the Panama Canal Neutrality Treaty
Austria has begun the process of joining the Panama Canal Neutrality Treaty, Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha announced.
The Austrian government officially began the process of joining the Protocol of the Treaty on Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal, Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez announced. In a letter addressed to the Austrian Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, the head of Panamanian diplomacy expressed the Panamanian government’s gratitude for the decision made by the European nation.
“Austria’s decision is a clear demonstration of confidence in Panama, in the value of international law, and in the importance of preserving spaces that serve peace, trade, and understanding among nations,” Martínez-Acha emphasized.

The chancellor also noted that Austria’s accession represents a show of support for the principle of the Canal’s neutrality and the international commitment to keep the interoceanic waterway open, safe, and at the service of world trade. The letter also highlights that Austria maintains a long tradition of commitment to peace, neutrality and multilateralism, so its incorporation into the protocol has special significance for Panama. Martínez-Acha argued that each State that joins the treaty strengthens the vision of international cooperation and reaffirms that respect for international law remains key to guaranteeing stability and shared prosperity. The Panamanian government believes that this step will further strengthen diplomatic and cooperation ties between the two nations.
