OPINION: The tattered legacy of President Cortizo

It is hard to imagine the legacy of Laurentino Cortizo. It is easier to count his failures: education is not the promised star and health hardly stands out, overshadowed by the veil that covers it, transparency trampled on like never before. Cortizo has supported corruption, allowing waste in alleged payroll expenses; favoring his party with a view to the next electoral contest; vetoing anti-corruption laws; returning favors to campaign “investors”; crossing their arms before the blatant robbery of representatives and mayors; promoting scandals, even in state universities. In the end, we will remember the two pandemics: covid-19 and the one that destroyed the economy. We will not forget that health was the excuse to steal from four hands or the privileges that a few politicians received compared to the rest of the country; that thousands lost their jobs and will probably never get them back. We will never forget –and in fact, we will suffer from it later– the black hole left by his government: the largest debt of all time and only in three years. Billions in loans to an unknown destination, but we suspect. A Legacy to which we must add two more years of President Cortizo – LA PRENSA, Aug. 7.
