The 4 Million Cost Increase of Phase One of the Gorgas Campus to $72.4 Million was Due to Site Conditions
Phase one of the Gorgas Campus went from $68.4 million to $72.4 million after a $4 million addendum for adjustments to the foundation due to soil conditions.
The new campus project arose from the urgent need to replace the current 86-year-old building. Subsurface conditions forced a modification of the foundation design for the new Gorgas Campus, located next to the City of Health in the township of Ancón, and increased the cost of its first phase by more than $4 million, from $68.4 million to $72.4 million. The request was supported by the director of the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (Icges), Nicanor III Obaldía, who explained to the deputies that the contractual modification arose due to subsoil conditions that could not be determined during the initial design stage and that forced a change in the planned foundation system.
