The National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (Idaan) awarded a contract for more than $4.9 million for the study, design, construction and improvements of the pipeline that transports water from the Rufina Alfaro water treatment plant to the storage tanks of the city of Las Tablas, in the province of Los Santos.  The winning proposal was below the reference price set by the entity, which amounted to $5.6 million.

The water supply in Las Tablas, Panama, faces chronic challenges, primarily driven by drought and contamination in the La Villa River, which serves as the region’s main source. While local authorities (IDAAN) regulate and treat the water, residents and visitors frequently experience service disruptions, pressure issues, and periodic boil-water advisories.

Key Aspects of the Water Supply

  • Primary Source: Most of Las Tablas is supplied by the Rufina Alfaro water treatment plant, which draws from the La Villa River.
  • Service Interruptions: The area is prone to water cuts and low pressure, especially during the dry season (December to May) when river levels drop, or during heavy rains that cause high turbidity (sediment and organic matter) in the river.
  • Water Quality & Safety: While treated tap water generally meets monitoring guidelines, locals and experts advise using bottled or filtered water for drinking and cooking. After periods of service disruption or network disinfection, tap water should not be consumed without boiling.
  • Backup Systems: Due to intermittent municipal supply, many homes and businesses use private reserve tanks (tanques de reserva) and electric pressure pumps to maintain consistent flow during outages.

What to Keep in Mind

If you are living in or traveling to Las Tablas, it is highly recommended to:

  • Store Bottled Water: Keep a supply of potable water on hand for drinking and brushing teeth.
  • Prepare for Outages: Be prepared for temporary drops in water pressure.

Filter Usage: Consider installing a high-quality water filtration system if you are staying long-term.
