Squatters evicted from indigenous property
FIFTEEN people were evicted Thursday from the Madungandí Comarca after an operation carried out by the national police and regional leaders.
The evictions, which involved five families, followed an agreement reached with the government after indigenous protestors has blocked a major highway to protest the presence of squatters on protected land.
During the eviction, the atmosphere became tense, and police had to mediate to prevent clashes between the so-called settlers and the indigenous residents said La Prensa.
The police and other officials left for the settlement, , at 8 a.m. in four boats.
There were also a number of boats manned by indigenous residents to carry the belongings of the people being evicted to ensure they did not return. Police seized several weapons to avoid any problems.
One of the settlers, Euclides Castro, presented a document stating he had the right to be there, but a magistrate with the group said it was not valid.
