The Purchase of Laptops in Panama is Being Investigated as Confirmed by Prosecutor Gómez Rudy.

Panama’s Public Ministry opened a preliminary investigation into the Ministry of Education’s (Meduca) $28.4 million contract for 54,000 teacher laptops. General Prosecutor Luis Carlos Gómez confirmed the probe began following a direct request from outgoing Education Minister Lucy Molinar amidst public controversy and her subsequent resignation.

Investigation Details.

  • The Contract: Awarded to IS Group, S.A. for $28.4 million to provide Liby-brand AI-enabled laptops to public school teachers.
  • The Initiator: Former Education Minister Lucy Molinar requested the Panama Public Ministry inquiry herself to clear up questions regarding the procurement process.
  • Current Status: The investigation is in a preliminary stage to review administrative files, award procedures, and execution.

The Attorney General’s Office (PGN) is investigating one of the last actions taken by Lucy Molinar, Minister of Education pictured on the right, until last Wednesday: the purchase of 54,000 laptops for teachers, at a cost of $28.4 million.  “Yesterday we received a note from Ms. Lucy Molinar, requesting an investigation into a state contract that was carried out through the ministry she added,” said Gómez Rudy pictured left.
