Panama City to take back control of garbage
THE RESPONSIBILITY for keeping the streets of Panama City clean will return to the Mayor’s but the waste authority AAUD will not eliminated.
Mayor-elect José Isabel Blandón made the announcement on Sunday, May 11 and said the entity will be maintained as a governing body of control of waste for all the country's municipalities.
He said this will help address problems of landfills becoming too full.
Blandón said that, to counter this problem, the government is going to invest in waste treatment facilities.
The AAUD, which was created by the government of Ricardo Martinelli in 2010, when he removed responsibility for garbage collection from the city The authority is currently directed by Enrique Ho Fernández.
