The Proliferation of Red Algae on Panamanian Coasts is Being Monitored.

Blooms of a red alga of the genus Ceramium continue to be monitored in different sectors of the Panamanian coast, where they have been reported for more than a month.  According to the Ministry of the Environment, preliminary assessments indicate that the algae is not toxic. However, its accumulation in large quantities can reduce oxygen levels in the water and generate unpleasant odors during decomposition.  Studies are currently underway to genetically identify the species and determine the factors that favor its proliferation, with support from specialists at the University of Panama, the Technological University of Panama, and other institutions.
