Martinelli claims death threats as he modifies security law

PRESIDENT Ricardo Martinelli said on Thursday, May 22,that he will modify the law to make immediate family members eligible for a security detail when he leaves office.

Tuesday, the Cabinet Council approved the changes

Martinelli said that his intention is that the children of former presidents have security for five years and for former first ladies it would extend for an additional five years.

Earlier, Martinelli reduced the security details for Vice President and President-elect Juan Carlos Varela, former President Martín Torrijos and Deputy-elect Ana Matilde Gómez.
Martinelli justifies the protection for his family, because – according to him-, his government has made the largest number of drug seizures in the country's history reports La Prensa
"I've made a number of powerful enemies and extradited a large number of drug traffickers. We captured drug traffickers at our borders. The son of the president of Surinam was extradited from here," he said.
He said domestic threats come from businessman Jean Figali, whose property was confiscated by the state, and PRD politician Zulay Rodríguez, who – according to "intelligence reports" cited by Martinelli – has made threats against him
"There are many threats from people who want me to kill me," he said.
