Better Days Ahead for San Miguelito with the New Cable Cars

The contract for the Panama and San Miguelito cable cars awarded to the company Doppelmayr Panama Corp. for the San Miguelito cable cars has been ratified by the comptroller Anel Flores. The estimated time for completion according to the schedule is 30 months at a cost of $255.2 million.

The project includes a route of approximately 6.6 kilometers and six stations, connecting to Metro Line 2 at the Cincuentenario station. The route will extend to the interconnection point between Cincuentenario Avenue and España Avenue.

The cable car project is projected to generate employment in the fields of operations and maintenance.
Interesting fact: In 2004 Medellin, Colombia opened it’s Metrocable system becoming the first city in the world to successfully integrate aerial cable cars into a municipal mass-transit network. This project provided jobs, and allowed the residents of isolated neighborhoods a means of transportation to the inner city for work.
