Panama Dresses in Tradition and Pride: National Folklore Week
National Folklore Week will be marked by countless activities such as forums, conferences and galas that seek to prevent the cultural heritage from being lost. Artists, communities and folklorists unite in National Folklore Week 2026.
Panama is preparing to experience an unprecedented cultural celebration known as the National Folklore Week 2026, an event that promises to fill every corner of the country with music, dance and tradition. Likewise, this celebration was established by a resolution, which declared it of cultural, social and educational interest, with the objective of strengthening and promoting Panamanian roots as a vital axis of our identity. Likewise, the program will run from August 18 to 23, with activities including museum exhibitions, academic workshops, specialized forums, and galas that will pay tribute to the great figures of national folklore.
In addition, one of the most anticipated moments will be the Forum dedicated to the pollera, on Thursday, August 20, where renowned experts will share knowledge about the evolution and preservation of this traditional garment at the Beby Torrijos theater in the City of Arts. On the other hand, on Friday the 21st, the Gala of Yesteryear will be held, dedicated to honoring pioneers of folklore such as Petita Escobar and Elisa de Céspedes, while on Saturday the 22nd, coinciding with World Folklore Day, the National Folklore Gala will take place, awarding folklorists from all regions of the country.
In this regard, Wilfredo Moreno, cultural manager of MiCultura, explained that the National Folklore Week seeks to create a platform for expression and active participation for all actors in the folklore field, preventing the loss of cultural heritage and reaffirming its relevance in the national identity. Moreno also highlighted that the Ministry of Culture is projecting a historic impact, turning this week into a point of cohesion and identity pride, capable of democratizing access to culture and strengthening the social fabric throughout the country. Looking ahead, this celebration is expected to establish itself as an international platform, boosting folkloric events in all provinces and revitalizing the local artisans’ economy, ensuring that Panamanian traditions remain alive for future generations.
