Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino announced on Thursday that he will hold a meeting next Monday with Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado to discuss the democratic future of Venezuela. During his weekly press conference, Mulino explained that the meeting was requested by Machado several weeks ago and that the meeting will be private, with no official topics on the agenda. The president indicated that he wants to hear the Venezuelan leader’s view on the political situation in her country and the direction it could take in the coming months. Machado is scheduled to arrive in Panama this Friday to fulfill an agenda that includes a meeting with the Venezuelan community residing in the country and high-level political meetings.

According to reports, the opposition leader will remain in Panamanian territory until Monday, when she will hold a face-to-face meeting with Mulino and Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha. Mulino affirmed that the Venezuelan crisis remains a cause for concern for Panama and several other countries in the region. He also stated that his government will continue to support international efforts seeking a democratic and legitimate solution for Venezuela. Machado’s visit is part of a regional tour focused on strengthening international support for the Venezuelan opposition and maintaining contact with the diaspora that has left the country in recent years.
