Wiretap victims demand Martinelli arrest
VICTIMS of illegal wire taps during the Ricardo Martinelli government are pressing Judge Jerome Mejía to order the ex-president’s arrest,
Rosendo Rivera, a victim and former attorney for Martinelli, petitioned the judge on Friday Mar. 4 along with lawyers Carlos Herrera Morán, Roberto García, Rodolfo Pinzón, Cecilia Torres and Francisco Carreira Pittí, who represent other victims.
The lawyers presented a request to expedite the apprehension of Martineeli who fled Panama on Jan. 28, 2015. They called on Mejia to fulfill the decision reached by the plenary of the court to arrest Martinelli issued on Dec. 21.
“More than two months have passed since the Supreme Court issued the provisional arrest warrant,” the group’s petition to the judge said.
They also pointed out that the judge has failed to petition Interpol to order the arrest of the former president or started extradition proceedings. Martinelli is thought to be in Miami, reports La Prensa.
According to the lawyers, the delays are unfair and contrary to the rule of law.
