MEDIA WATCH: Call for veto to impunity law
Hoy por Hoy, La Prensa, September 2
THE NATIONAL Assembly only had to approve an article to abolish Law 55 of 2012, which provides an infamous shield to the deputies, who then would be subject to common rules applicable to all citizens.
Instead, members of the Legislature insult us with a bill in which all branches of government, and those by those in the highest offices in the country, become a sinister and reckless caste of untouchables. The summary evidence and the requirement that it needs to be “suitable” remains; a requirement of absolute majority in plenary in both the National Assembly and the Supreme Court is set out to apply simple precautionary measures. It extends to those investigated in their absence, privileges that can only benefit the ex-presidenr in his self-imposed exile. While in Guatemala the Congress, including members of the ruling party, [unanimously] approved the prosecution of their president, our politicians show that their cynicism and impudence have no limits. Mr. President, to save our democracy, give this law a veto and end impunity.
