International investors for Nicaragua Canal
THE NICARAGUA Grand Canal now has investors from Europe, Asia, North America and South America says Telemaco Talavera a spokesman for the Canal Commission.
Talavera did not say when the environmental and social impact studies of the Canal will be presented. although earlier he had said they would be ready in early July
Work on the canal, was inaugurated last December, but the studies have not been completed, earning criticism from various sectors in Nicaragua.
The 278 kilometer waterway in the south of the country will be three times larger than that of Panama, allowing for the passage of the largest ships in the world.
The investment for the construction is valued at $50,billion by the Chinese Group HKND, and will employ an estimated 50,000 people, 25,000 of them Nicaraguan. Since the Government of Nicaragua signed the construction agreement with the owner of HKND, Wang Jing, in 2013, state representatives and Nicaraguan business people have been invited to various countries involved in the project.
It has been dogged by controversy because of the advantages granted to the concession by the government and by protests from residents whose lands will be expropriated without appeal
HKND expects to complete the construction of the Canal in 2019.
