Government loyalist appointed Ombudsperson
A LAWYER who has previously been chosen as an election candidate by each of the parties that make up the governing coalition, has been chosen as Panama’s new Ombudsperson.
Lilia Herrera Mow, 51, was a candidate for Democratic Change (CD), in 2009 was nominated for CD as a candidate for deputy in the 8-1 district of Ariajan in 2009. In 2004 she was chosen to run as a candidate for MOLIRENA.
She did not reveal details of her political ventures in her resume when applying for the job along with 48 others.
The National Assembly named her on Wednesday September 4 as the replacement for Patria Portugal who was dismissed in July.
Herrera Mow received the vote of a majority of deputies. In spite of the intervention of eight deputies who were allowed five minutes each to speak,
Panameñista deputy, Jose Luis Varela, pointed out thar she had omitted information on her electoral ventures in a resume which was provided to all Members.
Herrera, who is the third woman to hold the post, had previously been named as a judge of the Fifth Chamber by President Ricardo Martinelli, but never got to take office as the introduction of the Fifth chamber was repealed.
