Detained N Korean freighter awaiting UN inspectors

The work of unloading the North Korean ship detained in Panama with undeclared Cuban weapons on board concluded Sunday,August 11,The  UN inspectors were due to arrive at the port of Manzan illo where the ship is berthed.

Prosecutor Javier Caraballo said "In the early morning hours of Sunday, we finished the work of unloading the sugar," Caraballo said referring to the cargo that was under which the containers carrying the outdated equipment  were hidden. "In total we have found 25 containers with outdated military equipment and six vehicles for military use."

The "Chong Chon Gang" was detained on July 10 as it was entering the Panama Canal. Panamanian authorities boarded the vessel, the looking for drugs but found the weapons instead.under large quantities of bags of sugar.

Minister of Security José Raúl Mulino also announced the completion of the unloading on his Twitter account. Caraballo said there are parts of the vessel that still need to be examined..

After finding the weapons, Panama requested the UN's aid due to the sanctions in place barring North Korea from arms trafficking.

The delegation of experts will prepare a report for the UN Security Council.
