Panama: Puerto Armuelles Multipurpose Dock Works are 39% Complete

Construction of the Puerto Armuelles Multipurpose Pier is 39% complete in its first phase, according to the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP).

You may remember some history of Puerto Amuelles that was Chiquita Banana country at one time. Banana strikes caused Chiquita to leave, jobs were lost, and Puerto became a ghost town. That seems to be the current story in Bocas del Toro where lessons could have been learned. There have been many discussions how Bocas del Toro is becoming the next Puerto Amuelles.

The port initiative aims to enhance maritime connectivity, trade, and attract investment in the district of Barú and the province of Chiriquí. Its construction is also boosting local economic growth by creating jobs and strengthening productive activities.  Along these lines, the multipurpose dock will generate more than 2,000 direct jobs and provide infrastructure for storage, freight transportation, and industrial development, facilitating the import and export of products.  The AMP stated that the community and business sector enthusiastically welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential to transform Barú’s social and productive environment.
