Fire insurance premiums to help fire fighters
A percentage of future fire insurance premiums will be collected by the government to buy equipment for the Panama Fire Department.
On Wednesday June 12 President Ricardo Martinelli sanctioned three laws that were approved during the extraordinary session in the National Assembly, including one that will provide new revenue to the Panama Fire Department.
The other laws recognize employment benefits for public servants who are unreasonably dismissed and another that pays government workers 13 month benefits who failed to receive them between 1989 and 1991.
According to the Secretary of State Communications, the employee benefits law will offer a level of protection to the public sector "as never before” The law says that any person employed permanently by the executive, legislative, comptroller, Social Security or decentralized institutions shall be eligible for benefits if they are dismissed without cause.
This will be at the rate of one week's wages for every year worked or a proportional amount, and entitles them to receive compensation calculated based on the last earned salary.
