Vendors unhappy with planned underground car park
NOT EVERYONE is happy with the announcement of the building of two more underground parking garages in Panama City.
One of the proposed locations is the home of the Street Vendors and Crafts Market on plaza 5 de Mayo. The initiative already has the approval of the Municipal Council of Panama. The Mayor has the authority to negotiate and sign the concession contract for the study, design, construction, maintenance, management and operation of the property at the site of the market, part of Banco Hipotecario Nacional.
However, residents and businesses in the area have expressed opposition to the initiative says CentralAmericaData.
According to Gerardo Cardenas, president of the Association of Members of the Craft Market, they have not been taken into account and what little they know has been gleaned from the media.
"There is talk that we are to be relocated, but have not even been approached to talk about it. We are calling on the authorities to provide further information on this issue," he said.
