ENERGY CRISIS: Rain, but not enough
WEATHER forecasts have improved (ie., prospects of more rain) but not enough to suspend energy saving measures.
National Secretary of Energy Vicente Prescott emphasized that not enough rain has fallen in Panama to raise the levels of reservoirs feeding Panama's hydro projects, which supply the bulk of the country's electricity.
Prescott told La Prensa that blackouts still remain an option although recent rains have been "a little more encouraging."
Since Tuesday May 7 the government has implemented a number of energy saving measures including the suspension of classes in schools and universities for three days Wednesday, the banning of electric signs, altered work hours for public servants and the shutting down of air conditioners
Schools were back in session on Monday but they are not allowed to use air conditioners or lights.
