Farmers oppose creation of reservoir

“THE COMMUNITY of El Tolu is not for sale” say residents who plan to oppose the flooding of their land to create a reservoir.

The Inhabitants said Sunday that they are concerned about the Ministry of Agricultural Development's plan to sell their land to develop an irrigation system in the Tonosi Valley in the province of Los Santos
Residents complained that the ministry intends to flood some 602 hectares to create a reservoir on the Guerra River.
Eladio Pérez, spokesman for residents said  they oppose the plan because it will mean the flooding of their most productive lands, leaving them with areas that are not suitable for farming.
Resident Jaquelin Vázquez said many of the residents have lived in this area for decades and should not be forced to relocate.
Farmer Paulino Vazquez said that producers downstream from the dam could be left without water during the dry season.
