Wanted: mayors who are good gardeners and garbage collectors

Panama’s encircled mayor, Bosco Vallarino, continues to land himself in hot water and, has misplaced documents backing allegations against his predecessor.

La Estrella reports that the country’s anti corruption czar Fernando Nunez Fabrega, has asked both the governor of the province of Panama, Mayín Correa, a former city mayor, to come up with documents that explain in detail the alleged acts of corruption committed by former City Mayor Juan Carlos Navarro.

All this while President Ricardo  Martinelli has stated  that Panamanians want “mayors that are good gardeners and good garbage collectors”

Nunez said that the Secretariat is drafting a letter to formally request information from the two officials.
He said that from the moment they discover any irregularities in the institutions they lead, all staff have a duty to inform the competent authorities and then proceed with the investigation.

Mayín Correa has questioned the mayor about the slow pace of his research and for not having brought complaints to the legal authorities.

The mayor claims the investigations are stalled because some documents have been lost Earlier this month, after enduring a storm of criticism, over his missteps, Bosco laid the blame on his predecessor and said there were five complaints against Navarro, after an audit revealed misuse of of between $83,000and $ 600,000 .

Two weeks later, the alleged tests seem to have disappeared.

This comes, says Estrella, on top of the mayor’s constant excuses for failing to resolve the issue of garbage collection.
President Martinelli has suggested that the mayor goes to work, instead of doing projects that do not work.
He reiterated that he cannot ask him to resign because that is the will of the people who elected him, but advised him to comply with what the people want.
Panamanians want “mayors that are good gardeners and good garbage collectors” said the president.
