Panama Municipality Leads a Cleanup Operation and Summons Representatives of Recycling Companies in Pueblo Nuevo.

The Municipality of Panama led a cleanup and waste collection operation in the district of Pueblo Nuevo, where several recycling companies operate whose representatives were summoned by municipal authorities, after the formation of a clandestine landfill in the sector was detected.  The event was carried out in coordination with the Urban and Domestic Cleaning Authority, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Health, the Ombudsman’s Office and the Pueblo Nuevo Community Board, with the aim of curbing the proliferation of the so-called “little plantations” that arise due to the inadequate disposal of waste in the area, the capital city municipality reported.

Yarelys Gómez pictured below, Deputy Director of Resilience and Climate Change for the Mayor’s Office, warned about the environmental impact generated by these accumulation points. “This type of activity negatively impacts waterways like the Río Abajo, located next to this makeshift dump, since the waste ends up in the riverbed and, ultimately, on our shores,” she stated.  Gómez indicated that the Municipality of Panama City is actively maintaining the daily sanitation project along the Matías Hernández and Río Abajo rivers, as well as along the Pacific coast between Amador and Costa del Este. She also emphasized that the municipal strategy includes environmental education and citizen participation initiatives to promote proper waste disposal and advance the recovery of the city’s water resources.
