If the Rise in Sea Temperature is Controlled, the Reefs Can Still Regenerate.

Coral reefs are losing ground, but they are still resisting ocean warming. The Caribbean has lost 43.4% of its live hard coral surface area in the last four decades.

The world’s coral reefs have lost 9.5% of their mass in the last four decades due to ocean warming. However, science rules out an irreversible collapse, given that corals still retain the capacity to regenerate if sea temperature rise is controlled and coastlines are protected.  This is according to the new report ‘Status of the World’s Coral Reefs: 2025’, published by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), the largest study in history with 21.1 million observations in more than 36,000 locations in 120 countries. 

The study warns that the deterioration of coral reefs has accelerated rapidly following mass bleaching events – episodes of thermal stress that cause coral death when sea temperatures rise excessively – recorded since 2010.  These episodes have become recurrent, such as the severe collapses of 2010 in Southeast Asia or on the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, which has suffered five mass bleaching events in the last decade, or the record heat waves in Florida and the Caribbean between 2023 and 2024.  It is the frequency of these thermal shocks that prevents the ecosystem from recovering, but if recovery windows occur, the coral can still regenerate, the report states.

Recovery Capacity.

In statements, the lead author of the report, Dr. Manuel González Rivero, said that the data confirms that the ecosystem “maintains its capacity for regeneration”.  “It’s quite reasonable to say, based on the results of this report, that we haven’t yet reached a point of no return. There is a worrying pattern of increasing degradation, but whenever there is sufficient time between bleaching events, the reefs show signs of recovery,” the researcher explained.  The trend is not uniform across the planet. Of the ten regions assessed, four are experiencing significant declines in their live hard coral area , led by the Persian Gulf (-48.7%) and the Caribbean (-43.4%), followed by the Pacific (-18.3%) and Australia (-10.9%). 

Conversely, four areas remain stable (the seas of East Asia, the Eastern Tropical Pacific, Brazil and the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden), while two show notable increases in their coral mass: the Western Indian Ocean (+43%) and South Asia (+16.2%).  Along with the loss of coral, the report analyzes the presence of macroalgae, organisms that tend to invade the rock when the coral dies and that have grown by 45% in the last four decades.  However, these algae currently occupy only 6.8% of the global seabed, a figure low enough to confirm that the reef has not been completely invaded and still has room to recover.  Proof of this resilience is that, when the sea gives a thermal respite, the coral regains ground: between 2017 and 2019 – after the great bleaching recorded between 2014 and 2017 – the surface area of ​​live hard coral rebounded by 6% worldwide.

Natural Shield.

The research also quantifies the strategic value of the reefs, defined as a “living structure” that provides environmental benefits valued at $9.9 trillion annually and generates another $36 billion in tourism.  Despite occupying less than 0.2% of the seabed, they are home to more than 25% of marine species and reduce wave energy by 97%, protecting 5.3 million people and coastal assets valued at $109 billion each year. 

The document highlights that 104 million people now live within five kilometers of a reef – an increase of 46% in two decades – that intensifies both the pressure on the environment and human dependence on its resources, on which nearly one billion people worldwide depend.  González Rivero warned that the erosion of this natural shield is already causing direct human devastation: “In the Pacific there are communities that have had to migrate because the islands where they live, once protected by reefs, are no longer sustainable for life.”

Local Action.

To prevent recovery windows from closing completely, the GCRMN urges coordinating compliance with the Paris Agreement – limiting warming to 1.5°C – with strict management of local pressures, such as overfishing, water pollution and coastal development.  “Local conservation efforts alone won’t stop climate change, but they are very important. If water quality improves and fishing is sustainable, the reef will maintain the resilience to grow back. The report’s message is not that there is no solution, but that the time to act is now,” the expert concluded.
