La Chorrera and the Emberá-Wounaan Region are Organizing Panama Youth Camps for Prevention and Training.
The National Directorate for the Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency (DIPRED) will conduct training camps in La Chorrera and the Emberá-Wounaan region. The first camp will take place from September 9 to 11 at the Mariano Rivera Sports Complex, where more than 300 students will gather at the invitation of Mayor Eloy Chong. Later, in October, the community of Puerto Indio, in the district of Sambú, will host 100 children and teenagers from various villages in the region, directly and indirectly impacting more than 600 residents.
During these activities, which will begin at 5:00 a.m., the DIPRED team will lead sports activities, values training, self-esteem building, and bullying prevention workshops to encourage students to stay in school and avoid gang recruitment. The program will also include theater workshops, modern dance performances, and presentations of traditional indigenous expressions that celebrate cultural identity through the use of traditional garments such as the paruma and the guayuco.
These actions are part of the social prevention program promoted by the Ministry of Government (Mingob), which seeks to create safe environments to mitigate the risk of minors becoming involved in illicit activities. In the last two years, more than 35,000 primary and secondary school students, along with their guardians, have participated nationwide in educational, sports, and cultural activities, as well as in the ‘School for Parents’ program.
Dalila Mosquera pictured above, acting director of DIPRED, highlighted that the initiatives target beneficiaries between the ages of 6 and 29 and include weekly training sessions on school dropout prevention for young people in the El Chorrillo district.
