Alex Lee Along with Javier Lynch and Orlando Salazar Were Transferred to Coiba in Panama.
Below is Alex Lee when he was arrested. The investigation began following a series of audits delivered by the Comptroller General of the Republic regarding irregular handling of funds delivered by the National Decentralization Authority.
Alex Lee, Javier Lynch, and Orlando Salazar were transferred to Coiba Island according to Resolución No. 740 due to security reasons, operational needs, and ongoing infrastructure remodeling at the Nueva Esperanza prison. There were concerns earlier in the day when they were removed from the Nueva Esperanza prison. Official reasons stated by the Penitentiary System director include:
- Security and Operations: Addressed as an institutional operational necessity and security measure.
- Facility Remodeling: Ongoing infrastructure work at the Nueva Esperanza center.
- Population Management: Optimizing the control and distribution of inmates, reducing overcrowding risks, and easing internal conflicts.
The Penitentiary System Directorate transferred the former mayor of Colón, Alex Lee, and the representative and treasurer of the Barrio Norte community board, Javier Lynch and Orlando Salazar, respectively, citing security reasons and the reorganization of the prisoners who are in the Nueva Esperanza prison. Lee, Lynch, and Salazar are being held in pretrial detention by order of a judge. They have not been convicted.
