Operation Pandora: Panama Lawyer José Miguel Jurado Surrenders After Being Summoned for Tax Fraud

The National Police captured a man identified as one of the alleged ringleaders of Operation Pandora, an investigation that uncovered a supposed corruption and tax fraud scheme with an estimated impact of $40 million. The arrest is part of the proceedings carried out by the Public Prosecutor’s Office to dismantle the network investigated for alleged irregularities linked to the General Directorate of Revenue (DGI).
According to the investigations, the network allegedly used fraudulent maneuvers to affect the State’s tax collection, which is why the authorities have carried out raids, arrests and other procedures as part of the case. The detainee will be presented in the next while before a judge of guarantees, where the Prosecutor’s Office will request the legalization of the arrest, the formal charges and the corresponding precautionary measures.
The investigation continues to establish the scope of the network and determine if there are more people involved in this case of alleged corruption and tax fraud, which has several people under investigation. Last Saturday, at the request of the prosecution, a judge charged 16 people and ordered the arrest of 13 for the crimes of money laundering, embezzlement, and forgery.
