Drinking Water in Chiriquí Meets Quality Standards: IDAAN Assures Consumers

The IDAAN statement comes after an investigation into the increase in cases of vomiting and diarrhea in the province of Chiriquí.

The National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (IDAAN) reported that it is maintaining permanent monitoring of the quality of drinking water in the province of Chiriquí, after the Ministry of Health (MINSA) initiated an investigation into the increase in cases of vomiting and diarrhea in the region.  The institution reported that it is actively collaborating in the efforts to clarify the situation. As part of these procedures, technical staff have carried out the following verification actions:

  • Physicochemical analyses: Samples were taken at the raw water intake of the David and Majagua rivers, at the Ciudad de David (Los Algarrobos) water treatment plant, and at various points in the distribution network. Preliminary results comply with the parameters of the 2019 Copanit standard, confirming that the supplied water is suitable for human consumption.

  • Sectors evaluated: The sampling included the areas of Doleguita, the hospital area, La Riviera, Los Abanicos, San José neighborhood, San Cristóbal, Eliza Chiari, Terronal and Los Algarrobos.

  • Chlorine measurement: Checks on the distribution network show that chlorine levels remain within the required values. These checks are part of the daily monitoring carried out by operators and the Water Quality Laboratory at the province’s 13 water treatment plants.

Regarding the microbiological analyses, IDAAN explained that these are part of the standard control protocol and require approximately 24 hours for processing. The final results will be communicated once the corresponding evaluations are completed.
