Panamanians Visiting Niagara Falls Mistakenly Cross into the US and Were Detained
The embassy explained that the people detained did not have the required visa to enter the United States, an essential requirement for Panamanian citizens who wish to enter that country.
The Panamanian Embassy in Canada issued a warning to Panamanians visiting Niagara Falls after registering several cases of citizens who accidentally crossed the border into the United States and were temporarily detained by immigration authorities. This is all part of FIFA World Cup 2026 as Toronto and Niagara Falls are close.

According to a statement released by the diplomatic mission, the incidents have occurred mainly in the Buffalo area, where some travelers may have mistakenly entered US territory due to confusion while driving or not properly identifying road signs. The embassy explained that the people detained did not have the required visa to enter the United States, an essential requirement for Panamanian citizens who wish to enter that country.

Given this situation, diplomatic authorities called on those planning to visit Niagara Falls to take extra precautions, carefully check traffic signs, and avoid mistakenly taking bridges that lead into US territory. They also recommended planning travel routes in advance and verifying the necessary documentation before undertaking any journey near the border.

The situation arises amid the Panamanian team’s visit to Toronto, Canada, to support their national team during the 2026 World Cup. The Embassy of Panama in Canada and the Consulate General of Panama in Toronto stated that they maintain their consular assistance services available to address any situation involving Panamanian citizens and ensure that their visits are conducted safely.

Panama faces Croatia in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L match at Toronto Stadium (BMO Field) in Toronto on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. ET.
