On Wednesday Panama’s National Team Aircraft Arrives

Panama’s National Team Aircraft, operated by Copa Airlines, is a Boeing 737 (often a 737-800 or 737 MAX) featuring striking red and white designs to celebrate the Panamanian Football Federation and the “Marea Roja” (Red Tide) team. The design highlights the team’s shield, with slogans like “Official Airline of the Panama National Team”.

Key design elements of the custom paint includes:

  • Color Scheme: Primarily red, with white accents, representing the “Red Tide” (Marea Roja) nickname of the team.
  • Team Branding: Features the Panamanian Soccer Federation (FEPAFUT) shield.
  • Messaging: The fuselage often features phrases such as “¡Vamos Panamá, estamos contigo!” (Come on Panama, we are with you!).
  • Aircraft Type: Commonly applied to Copa Airlines Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737 MAX 8/9, designed for international travel.

The plane serves as a flying tribute to the national team, showcasing the nation’s passion for football across the Americas.

The official Copa Airlines aircraft dedicated to transporting Panama’s national football team is scheduled to arrive in Panama on Wednesday, May 6. A Medcom delegation traveled to Boeing’s factory in Seattle, Washington, to receive the plane, which has been branded as the “Avión de la Sele.”  The aircraft is designed to serve as a special transport for the players of the Selección Nacional de Fútbol, giving the team a distinctive travel identity tied to one of the country’s most popular sports symbols.  The plane’s design was created by Panamanians Ernesto de León and Henry Katz. Their work gives the aircraft a local signature and adds to the sense of national pride surrounding the team’s travel arrangements.

Using a specially branded aircraft reflects how football continues to play a central role in Panama’s public life. For fans, the plane becomes more than transportation: it is a visible extension of the national team’s image and a symbol of support around international competition.  Special aircraft liveries are often used to promote national identity, airline branding, or major sporting projects. In Panama’s case, the “Avión de la Sele” links Copa Airlines, a major Panamanian carrier, with the country’s football program in a way that is both promotional and ceremonial.  The arrival of the aircraft also underscores the broader relationship between sport and national branding.

For the national team, travel is part of the competitive routine, but a custom plane adds a public-facing layer that can strengthen fan engagement and national recognition.  Football remains one of the most followed sports in Panama, and the national team draws attention across the country during international matches and qualifying campaigns. A dedicated aircraft fits into that wider cultural atmosphere, where the team’s image often becomes part of the national conversation.  As the plane arrives in Panama, it is set to become a new visual emblem for the country’s football ambitions and a recognizable part of the team’s presence at home and abroad.
