Illegal Mining in the Darién Panama: Four Arrested

Plastic containers with yellow powder, presumably gold, were seized. The camp located at the headwaters of the Sábalo River was dismantled by Senafront.

Following an operation carried out by the 5th Special Forces Brigade of SENAFRONT, a mining camp was detected, which was located at the headwaters of the Sábalo River, in the Darién province.  During the police action, four subjects were apprehended, in addition to the seizure of plastic containers with yellow powder presumably gold, motor pumps used as dredges, digital scales and bags with dried herb of presumed illicit substances. 

In the camp that was dismantled, other implements such as shovels, pans and diving masks, commonly used in the illegal extraction of minerals, were also found.  In this joint operation with the National Aeronaval Service, the detainees were transferred to the community of La Palma, and then placed under the orders of the Primary Care Prosecutor’s Office.  The public force reiterates its commitment to combat illicit activities that threaten the environment and the safety of the population.
