China’s Pressure on Global Trade Created a Bloc of Countries Aligning Itself with the U.S. and Panama

Panamanian-flagged vessels face certain restrictions in China.  Costa Rica, Honduras, Peru, and Ukraine joined the list of countries that support Panama in the face of China’s measures against its ships.  International pressure continues to grow regarding the measures applied by China against ships using Panama’s flag of convenience. 

Among the new statements, Costa Rica stands out, with its Foreign Ministry expressing its “deep concern and firm condemnation” of the inspections and delays, it described as arbitrary and unjustified at Chinese ports. According to Costa Rica, these practices jeopardize the stability of international trade.

Panama Receives International Support in the Conflict with China

Countries back Panama against Chinese inspections of Panamanian ships. They warn of the impact on global trade.  The Government of Panama expressed its gratitude for the support of several countries and international organizations in the face of the recent inspections and detentions of Panamanian-flagged vessels in Chinese ports, a situation that has generated concern in global trade.

Countries That Support Panama

According to the Panamanian Foreign Ministry, the pronouncements of countries such as:

  • USA
  • Israel
  • Ukraine
  • Costa Rica
  • Honduras
  • Paraguay
  • Peru

They defend Panamanian sovereignty and respect for its ship registry as a key element of international trade.

Concern Over Impact on Global Trade

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio pictured above, warned that the measures taken by China against Panamanian ships could:

  • Increase costs for businesses and consumers
  • Cause delays in supply chains
  • Weaken confidence in the international trading system

Reports From Other Countries

From Israel, Foreign Minister Gideon Saar indicated that the application of maritime regulations must be technical and free from political pressure.  For his part, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reaffirmed support for Panama’s sovereignty and the defense of global trade.

Defense of International Law

Countries such as Costa Rica, Honduras, Paraguay, and Peru agreed on:

  • Defend freedom of navigation
  • Reject arbitrary measures
  • Uphold international maritime law

The Panamanian government reiterated that its ship registry and its role in global maritime trade are fundamental, so any action that affects free navigation directly distresses the international economy.
