Ricardo Martinelli’s Lawsuit Against Foco for Extortion and Bribery is Accepted

Former Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli confirmed the filing of a new lawsuit against the digital media outlet Foco and questioned the management of former Attorney General Javier Caraballo.

Former President Ricardo Martinelli announced yesterday that a criminal complaint against the digital media outlet Foco has been accepted, for alleged accusations of extortion and bribery.

Legal Action Against Digital Media

According to the former president, his legal team has filed more than 12 criminal complaints against that media outlet. Martinelli stated that he hopes the Public Prosecutor’s Office will not act like the previous administration, which he accused of protecting and “collaborating” with former Attorney General Javier Caraballo, whom he described as nefarious and corrupt. It should be noted that Caraballo now serves as ambassador to Austria.

Background and Accusations of Extortion

The former governor also asserted that the media outlet has been accused by several people of alleged extortion and bribery.  It is important to remember that, in 2020, the Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office admitted a criminal complaint filed by Martinelli against Mauricio Valenzuela, for crimes against the inviolability of secrecy, the right to privacy, freedom of assembly and of the press.
