A Tribute to Ismael Rivera Headlines the Panama Jazz Festival

A free event began at 3:00 pm and brought together families and music lovers on the closing day of the festival.

The Panama Jazz Festival celebrated its 23rd edition with an open-air concert Saturday afternoon, January 17th, as is tradition, in the Central Quadrangle of the City of Knowledge. The free event began at 3:00 pm and brought together families and music lovers for the festival’s closing day.  The presentation is dedicated to the Puerto Rican singer Ismael Rivera, an influential figure in Afro-Caribbean music.  In addition, the tribute featured Moncho Rivera, the artist’s nephew, who worked alongside his uncle as a percussionist and continues his legacy on stage. Rivera performed accompanied by the Salsa Project orchestra, directed by Charles Irvin.

As part of the security measures, the organization informed that during the concert the entry of weapons of any kind, sharp or potentially dangerous objects, as well as laser pointers, was prohibited.  In addition, glass bottles and containers, as well as large coolers, were not permitted. To ensure visibility and proper use of the space, umbrellas or parasols that obstruct the public’s view were not allowed; in case of rain, ponchos were recommended. Large hiking backpacks and briefcases were also prohibited.  The use of drones, bicycles, skateboards and kite flying were also prohibited in the concert area.

The festival was declared a 100% smoke-free, family-friendly space; therefore, the consumption of cigarettes and vaping products was prohibited. Likewise, the presence of street vendors and the distribution of promotional material unrelated to the event were not authorized. The organizers emphasized that there was zero tolerance for acts of disrespect or violence towards volunteers, security personnel, staff, or attendees.   Essential items such as cell phones, portable chargers, identification documents, and cash or cards for food, beverages, and merchandise were permitted. Thermoses of water, food for personal consumption in biodegradable or reusable containers, and non-alcoholic beverages were also allowed, and these items checked by security upon entry.
