Panama City, Panama: The National Government decided to extend the safe conduct granted to former President Ricardo Martinelli for 72 hours. The new measure would add three additional days to the safe conduct permit, allowing for diplomatic negotiations between Panama and Nicaragua and ensuring that Martinelli will not be captured by Interpol due to an “apparent” alert once he leaves the Nicaraguan Embassy in Panama. “In relation to this process, the Government of the Republic of Nicaragua has requested clarification regarding an apparent alert issued by Interpol, which was rejected as inadmissible pursuant to Article 2 of the Interpol Statute,” states the statement issued at 7:32 p.m. on Monday, March 31. In this new statement, they also made clear the position of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ), which said it has “no observations since it is a power of the Executive branch outside the judicial system.”
