Ex vice-president voices concerns over power concentration
A former Vice President of Panama whose bloodied picture went around the world during the civil protests against the military dictatorship in Panama, has expressed his concerns over the concentration of powers in the Executive Branch.
Guillermo “Billy” Ford, who was Vice President in the first post dictatorship government, and a former ambassador to the United States, said on RPC radio that, Ricardo Martinelli, should weigh what is happening in the country and change course for the good of the country.
Ford was beaten up by government goons during protests against the Noriega dictatorship.
He said that the concentration of power was an excessive risk to get things done unilaterally and was not on brining benefits to the country. "This can not be dictatorship … it has to be a democracy."
Headded commented that such a concentration of power was unnecessary, as Martinelli was elected President with broad support.
"The unrest is not leading us to the best paths.”
Martinelli has come under strong criticism recently for putting controls of he governmentin too few hands, particularly his own..
