Police captain smuggled gun into jail –prisoner advocate
The gun used in the shooting of two prisoners was smuggled into the jail by a police captain according to an advocate for prisoners.
Javier Justiniani, president of a foundation to aid prisoners visited the Centro de Rehabilitación Nueva Esperanza in the province of Colon to meet with inmates about a recent shooting inside the jail.
He said inmates told him that a police captain was paid $2,000 to smuggle the weapon into the facility. The gun was then used during a brawl between rival gangs.
Police have charged two inmates in the case.
Justiniani warned that if the government does not take corrective measures in the coming days, there may be other clashes between rival gangs struggling for territory in the prison.
Colón Police Chief Diego de León said that he has no information that would suggest a police captain was involved . The police chief said Justiniani should go before prosecutors and swear out a complaint . That will help investigators bring charges in the case.
