Call for jailing of importer of killer drug
A call for the imprisonment of those responsible for nearly 150 deaths from diethyline glycol poison has been made by the president of the Human Rights Commission of the National Assembly.
Deputy Dana Castaneda said: "We demand justice in this country already, a good time, to close the case and send to jail the person who brought the criminal substance into this country.”
She was speaking in the first debate on the bill which recognizes the rights of victims affected by the poison that was in the medicine of the Social Security Fund (CSS).
At least 189 patients were affected by the poison introduced into cough mixture. Of these at least 134 died and 55 survived, according to the records of 2009.
"That mixture did not come on its own. Someone had to bring the substance to the country to make money," said Castaneda.
